SQL is the language of databases. It's used to create and maintain database objects, place data into those objects, query the data, modify the data, and, finally, delete data that is no longer needed. Databases lie at the heart of many, if not most business applications. Chances are very good that if you're involved with software development, you're using SQL to some degree. And if you're using SQL, you should own a good reference or two.

Now available in an updated second edition, our very popular SQL Pocket Guide is a major help to programmers, database administrators, and everyone who uses SQL in their day-to-day work. The SQL Pocket Guide is a concise reference to frequently used SQL statements and commonly used SQL functions. Not just an endless collection of syntax diagrams, this portable guide addresses the language's complexity head on and leads by example. The information in this edition has been updated to reflect the latest versions of the most commonly used SQL variants including:

  • Oracle Database 10g, Release 2 (including the free Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE))
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005
  • MySQL 5
  • IBM DB2 8.2
  • PostreSQL 8.1 database

4Good reference. Not entirely version specific.  Jun 23, 2010
This is a good reference book. Because SQL has so many flavors, there are nuances that exist which force writers to reference them in a almost any book on the subject. Narrowing in on your paticular version is very helpful. Perhaps these would be better written for a specific audience if they were Manufacturer and Version specific and without the crosswalks.

Wouldn't you sell more books if it were version specific?

5Very useful and practical book!!!!!!!!!  Jun 10, 2010
This is a very useful and practical book that contains tools and commands that you can use specified by db engine. It is made based on the most common database engines (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, DB2, SQLServer).

5Great reference for SQL 2005  Dec 15, 2009
This is a great reference for all platforms for SQL 2005. Everything is right at your fingertips and easy to find; and also well indexed. It is great for beginner and intermediate level users.

5SQL reference source  Sep 12, 2009
I was looking for a small SQL command resource and this fit the bill perfectly. The O'Reily series has never failed to hit the mark as a first class reference source. This book is small and pocketable and has provided me with the support I was looking for. I highly recommend this small powerful reference book!

4Good Little Handbook  Jan 09, 2009
As a systems admin, I find this book a great reference guide for writing SQL scripts. The instructions are clear and concise and cover most common situations. The examples aren't very clear, however, so you have to understand what the statements are dealing with, and the topics don't seem to be arranged appropriately (deleting and truncating are contained in two separate places in the book). But overall this book is a good reference guide for someone who is familiar with SQL, but needs a little assistance now and then.
